Is There a Divine Call?

Is there a specific divine call on the United States of America?  Would that call be valid in the 21^st century?

During the birth of the United States in the 18^th century, George Washington, John Adams and Thomas Jefferson along with many others of similar educational backgrounds were taught by using the Bible and its teachings of morality, integrity, respect and concern for others.

More than 90% of their learning came from these sources. In the early part of the 21^st century, less than 5 % of a public-school education speaks about honesty, integrity, respect and morality.

To save our nation, we must create a positive attitude of self-governance and self-discipline. There must be a strong commitment to learning, responsibility and accountability along with the knowledge of the difference between right and wrong.

I believe no matter where you are on the political spectrum you will agree with me our leadership on all sides and all levels is not as strong as we would prefer. In many friendly conversations, I often hear associates and colleagues comparing our leadership to the greats of the past. One of the most admired of those many greats was founding father George Washington. He was the first President of the United States and the commander-in-chief of the Continental Army during the American Revolutionary War.  General Washington led a feisty spirited group of young American rebels to one of the greatest military upsets of all times. They won the fight for our freedom and independence. George Washington was a man of great moral character and integrity obtained through the teachings of the Holy Scriptures in the early days of America.

Margaret Thatcher, Prime Minister of Great Britain, did a magnificent job as she turned the economy around, helped restore pride to England and gave a sense of purpose and direction to her people.  She was a lady of unquestionable credentials and a strong moral foundation. She stated, “freedom does not include freedom from responsibility”.  She believed in a strong rule of law.  In 1995, Prime Minister Thatcher spoke to the students and faculty of Harding University in Arkansas. During the questions, she was asked, “what is the greatest challenge for the United States”?  She quickly replied, “it is not social, it is not economic, it is moral”.  She often spoke of her admiration for the principles on which America was founded.  She said the Quakers came to America to practice their religion their own way.

Baron de Tocqueville of France toured the United States in the 1830’s and made these remarks related to the greatness of America. He said the greatness of America is not found in the richness or breadth of the land. America is great because it is good; as long as America is good, it will be great. If America ceases to be good, she will cease to be great. The Baron stated, “the source of America’s greatness and strength is found in the churches of the land”.

The Prime Minister of Great Britain and the Baron from France spoke words of wisdom. We must face the reality of today and agree we are in a serious moral decline; we must change and be intentional about rebuilding the greatness and the goodness of America. Make a decision and a commitment to do your part.
